Interlock Metal Roofing is an amazing company to do business with. My salesperson John was professional and knowledgeable. It is a big investment, but absolutely worth it. The installation crew was on time, hardworking and conscientious. I highly recommend this company to anyone who wants a roof to last 100 years!

My wife recently purchased our home, and we were aware that the roof was getting close to end of life. We researched a few different options and came across Interlock Metal Roof. After meeting with John from InterLock, it became clear to us that a metal roof was the best option for our needs. We plan to live in our home for 30+ years, and while a metal roof is more expensive than a traditional roof, it will be more than worth it over that period of time. We will never have to replace our roof again! It was also great to know that the roof could be installed over the existing shingles, reducing both the mess of the project and the waste created by the old shingles. Jesse and his crew did a great job installing the new roof, and we could not be happier with both the look and the quality of the aluminum shingles. We would recommend InterLock to anyone considering replacing their roof.

Review: August 13, 2020

The investment we made in a new aluminum slate style shingle roof was much more than we wanted to spend, but when we analyzed the pros and cons, including the cost, it came out ahead. We wanted to upgrade our 100-year-old Chicago bungalow and, in particular, rejuvenate the attic and basement spaces. We also want to install a solar panel array on the roof while the current incentives with the IRS, the state and the utility net metering system are still in effect. We wanted to reduce the massive composite shingle tonnage that is covering the incredible sea of roofs across the land. This is undoubtedly a rather large carbon footprint and the short lifespan of many roofs (10-15 years) are causing us to fill and foul unsustainable dumpsites. The weight of our aluminum roof is less than 850 lbs., compared to 3-4 tons of architectural composite shingles. The Interlock roof is a lifetime roof warrantied for 50 years. When/if it is ever replaced, it will be completely recycle-able. Much of the heat captured by composite shingle roofs is reflected by the aluminum. Previously, our attic could reach temperatures near 130°F. We have seen a significant reduction in afternoon attic temps, 10-20 degrees. The installers, Jesse, Sal and Ben were very professional, safe and kind to us. They took the extra time to do it right and solve problems rather than take an easier route. They maintained social distancing and wore masks when necessary. They screwed down OSB sheathing on the existing 100-year-old deck boards which are stamped Sterling Lumber and Supply Co. "The Yards with the Stock". This company was located two blocks from our house in the early 1900s. Interlock continues a tradition from Sterling Lumber to build to last a lifetime. The original 1919 roof rafters were 2"x4"x16' and held up under numerous Chicago blizzards and storms. Prior to the project, we augmented the rafters with 2"x6"x16' #1 southern yellow pine. Hopefully, the roof will bear another century of Chicago climate change. The Interlock Industries' workers installed 95 snow guards to breakup snow slides off the roof. The roof is very attractive and my neighbors have complemented the looks of it. The siding on the dormers were also replaced with the aluminum shingles. We had a choice of several shingle " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">colors and chose one called gunflint. The shingles have a " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">slate-like surface that is embossed on the aluminum to give it a textured appearance and perhaps breakup wind and water flows. The Interlock installers removed and sheathed over the chimney and vent caps and added a ridge vent. They installed soffit vents which apparently were never a feature of the house. They removed the gutters and reinstalled them in order to fit the drip edge flashing and lock down the shingles. Everything is fastened with screws powered by cordless screw guns. They did not use air compressors. They had safety lanyards attached to the ridge and foot boards around the perimeter of the roof throughout the installation. We are very satisfied with the look of our new roof and ready to install solar panels which won't have to be removed to re-roof because the roof will probably last longer than the solar panels. We are not young anymore and the long-term value of this project will most likely benefit others and the neighborhood more than us, but for the time being, we are happy customers.

Review: May 21, 2012Completion: November 24, 2003

I wanted to write and thank you for all your efforts in working with us to put an Interlock roof on our home. It was a big decision, and all during the process, I felt like you really had our interests at heart. You never tired of answering my questions and your follow-up, whenever I needed to speak with you, was first-rate. I think we had three Interlock crews involved in our project. First came the tear-off guys, who, in our case, had to remove a cedar shake roof before any other improvements could take place. Second, came the install crew, led by “Nacho”, who is absolutely terrific to work with. Ours was a relatively complicated job, with lots of angles, overhangs, gables and pitch to deal with. Nacho made it happen. Finally, the cleanup crew. When Interlock left the job site, my expectations were exceeded. No landscaping was damaged, and the debris was all cleared away. Now, we have a stunning red hidden tile aluminum Interlock roof to look at and enjoy. Perhaps most enjoyable is knowing there will never need to be another roof put on this house. Already, after just a few weeks, we have received numerous compliments from neighbors and friends and see a lot of people slowing in their cars to get a better look. Bob, thanks to you and all the Interlock staff again for your assistance in making this experience a positive one.

I very pleased with the product and pleased with the install. They did a good job. They did a better job than what I was expecting. The put the original flashing on, and I requested they put the flashing on that came with the roof, and they did. It looks much better. It was nice of them to change it for me. I was very pleased. It is what I wanted and I was lucky I found them.

Telling the real lead time as to when the job could get started. The job got pushed back from December 2016 to May 2017. It was fine with us as we really did not want anyone working on our roof in the winter. The workers and project manager were very professional.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in River West

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in River West, Illinois. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in River West.

Will a metal roof handle Chicago's freeze-thaw cycles better than asphalt?

Yes. Aluminum expands and contracts uniformly without cracking or curling, which matters in River West where you experience about 69 freeze-thaw days yearly. Asphalt becomes brittle in cold and soft in warmth, leading to splits that worsen each cycle. Interlock's 3105-H24 aluminum alloy and four-way interlocking design accommodate movement without stress points. The self-healing oxide layer also protects against salt spray and moisture infiltration during thaw periods. Over 15+ years, this translates to fewer leaks and no lamination failure.

How does a metal roof perform under River West's annual snowfall?

Metal roofs shed snow and ice more effectively than asphalt due to their smooth, hard surface and low friction. River West receives about 73 cm of snow annually, and the Interlock system's interlocking seams and pitch-dependent design prevent water pooling beneath ice dams. The lightweight construction—the Slate profile installs at just 0.41 lb/sq ft—means no structural reinforcement is required even with accumulated snow load. Optional snow guards can be specified if needed. The result is reduced ice dam risk compared to asphalt, which absorbs water and allows backing.

Does heavy rain in Cook County cause leaks in metal roofing?

No. River West receives about 1024 mm of rain annually, and the Interlock four-way interlocking panel design eliminates the overlap-seam vulnerability that allows water infiltration in traditional roofing. Each panel locks to its four neighbors—up, down, left, right—creating a unified surface where water sheds outward without entering seams. Combined with proper underlayment and ICC-ES ESR-1790 code compliance, the system channels rainfall off the roof without ponding or bypass. This design has performed reliably from coastal salt-air homes to high-precipitation regions for over two decades.

Can Interlock metal roofing withstand Chicago wind gusts?

Yes. River West experiences typical daily-max winds around 25 km/h with gusts reaching 95 km/h, and the Interlock system is warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h) when installed to specification. The four-way interlocking panels distribute wind load across the entire roof surface rather than concentrating stress on fastener points like shingle-style products. This engineering, combined with proper substrate attachment, exceeds local building code wind requirements under ICC-ES ESR-1790. Your roof will remain secure during severe weather events common to the region.

Why is aluminum roofing better than steel for Chicago's climate?

Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron—the element that oxidizes and degrades. Instead, aluminum develops a thin, invisible oxide layer that self-heals when scratched, protecting the underlying metal from moisture and salt exposure. In Cook County, where winter road salt and humidity accelerate corrosion in steel roofing, this is a decisive advantage. Interlock uses roofing-grade 3105-H24 and 3003-H24 aluminum alloy (ASTM B209) with Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon coating applied to both sides, warranted 30 years against chalking and fading. Your aluminum roof will outlast steel competitors in this climate.

Will my insurance cover hail damage to a metal roof in Illinois?

Metal roofing often qualifies for insurance discounts due to impact resistance. Interlock achieves UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the Guardian warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. Contact your insurer with the UL 2218 Class 4 rating and your policy may reflect a lower premium or deductible. Since hail events in Cook County can cause tens of thousands in damage to asphalt roofs, the combination of Interlock's proven impact durability and potential insurance savings makes the initial investment cost-competitive from year one.

Can I install a metal roof over my existing asphalt roof without reinforcing the structure?

Yes, because aluminum is extraordinarily light. The Interlock Tile profile, which replicates the appearance of slate or clay tile, installs at approximately 0.59 lb/sq ft—about 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile. Most existing residential roof structures in River West can support this load without reinforcement, saving thousands in structural modifications. Your installer will confirm framing condition, but in the vast majority of cases, Interlock installs directly over the existing roof, eliminating the labor and waste of a complete tear-off. This also means faster installation and less disruption to your home.

What warranty comes with Interlock metal roofing?

The Guardian is a lifetime limited, non-prorated material warranty for the original owner, covering rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance. It is one-time transferable to the next owner for 50 years from completion, adding significant resale value. This differs sharply from 20–30-year prorated warranties on asphalt shingles, where coverage declines annually. Over a 50-year ownership horizon in River West—with 1024 mm of rain and 69 freeze-thaw days yearly—this non-prorated protection against material failure provides genuine long-term security and peace of mind.

How much maintenance does a metal roof require compared to asphalt?

Metal roofing requires significantly less maintenance than asphalt. Interlock's smooth aluminum surface sheds debris, algae, and moss naturally—no chemical treatments needed. Asphalt absorbs moisture and degrades year-round, especially during River West's 69 annual freeze-thaw cycles, requiring regular inspection and patching. Interlock's four-way interlocking seams resist infiltration without caulk or sealant maintenance. The 30-year Alunar coating warranty against chalking and fading means no re-coating. For a metal roof installed over existing roofing, post-install maintenance is limited to occasional debris clearing and flashing inspection—substantially lower cost and effort than asphalt lifecycle management.

Will a metal roof reduce cooling costs in summer?

Yes. Interlock's energy-efficient colors feature thermal emissivity of 0.84 and initial solar reflectance up to 0.55 (Aged Copper Penny), reflecting heat that asphalt absorbs and re-radiates into your home. River West receives about 3094 sunshine hours annually, so summer heat reflection compounds over months. The Cool Roof Rating Council rating quantifies this advantage: reflective metal roofs reduce attic temperature by 10–20 degrees Fahrenheit compared to dark asphalt. Lower cooling load means reduced air-conditioning runtime and electricity use. In Cook County's variable climate—from hot summers to 73 cm of annual snow—the reflective properties persist year-round, lowering energy costs without sacrificing winter performance.

Is a metal roof a good choice for River West’s climate?

Yes. River West averages about 73 cm of snow, 1024 mm of rain, roughly 69 freeze–thaw days a year, with peak wind gusts near 95 km/h. Interlock® aluminum roofing is wind-rated to 193+ km/h (120 mph), UL 2218 Class 4 impact-rated and Class A fire-rated, and its four-way interlocking panels shed snow and resist ice dams and freeze–thaw cracking — all backed by a lifetime limited, transferable warranty.
